What Is a Veterinary Technician?
Veterinary technicians are trained animal healthcare professionals who work alongside veterinarians to provide medical and nursing care. Their responsibilities can include diagnostic testing, patient monitoring, medical treatments, and client education, within the scope permitted by state law and under appropriate veterinary supervision.
What Do Veterinary Technicians Do During Appointments?
Technicians assist with veterinary examinations, obtain relevant medical information, and help with treatments. They may collect blood, urine, and other diagnostic samples; monitor vital signs during anesthesia and recovery; administer prescribed medications; care for hospitalized patients; and explain medication and home-care instructions provided by the veterinarian.
What Is a Veterinary Technician Appointment?
Some routine pet care services may be scheduled as technician appointments when appropriate and authorized by the veterinarian. Depending on the patient’s needs, these may include nail trimming, ear cleaning, certain prescribed injections or treatments, blood pressure monitoring, selected sample collections, and other authorized services. Not every pet qualifies for a technician-only visit; some conditions require an examination by a veterinarian.
